Why Bone Density Matters

This January, we’re collaborating with Nailsea Chiropractic Clinic to offer DEXA bone density scans over two dedicated days.

Bone health is often overlooked because problems don’t usually cause symptoms until a fracture happens.

As Described by The Royal Osteoporosis Society, Osteoporosis is a condition where your bones lose strength, making you more likely to fracture (break) a bone – even after just a minor bump or fall.

These are called fragility fractures and most commonly affect the hip, spine, and wrist. They can lead to long-term pain, reduced mobility, and loss of independence. The good news is that bone loss can often be identified early.

What Is a DEXA Bone Density Scan?

A DEXA scan is a quick, painless scan that measures how strong your bones are. It is the most reliable way to check bone density and assess fracture risk.

The scan:

  • Takes only a few minutes

  • Uses very low levels of radiation

  • Does not require injections or preparation

  • Only requires placing your arm in the scanner

It provides clear information that can help guide exercise, lifestyle choices, and medical care if needed.

Who Is More at Risk of Low Bone Density?

According to national osteoporosis guidance, you may be at higher risk if you:

  • Are peri- or post-menopausal

  • Have had a fracture from a minor fall

  • Have a family history of osteoporosis or hip fracture

  • Take certain medications, such as long-term steroids

  • Smoke or drink alcohol regularly

  • Have a low body weight

  • Have had long periods of low activity, illness, or hormonal changes

You don’t need to have all of these factors - even one can increase risk.

Why Early Detection Is Important

Low bone density doesn’t mean a fracture will happen, but it increases the likelihood. Identifying changes early allows steps to be taken to protect your bones, such as:

  • Adjusting exercise to safely build strength

  • Improving nutrition and lifestyle habits

  • Reducing the risk of future fractures

  • Supporting informed decisions with your GP

Where appropriate, a GP letter will be provided following your scan to help guide onward care.
